2013 Summer Art Camp Fun

Art Camp this summer was fun time for us! This is a photo journal of what the kids and I were up to and the awesome art we created!

~ The 1st week we had a group of older kids.  This year I had a great young woman assist me named Catherine. She is heading into an early childhood education college program so this was perfect for both of us...and for the kids :-)

...a door opening to an adventure

and the supplies are ready!

Our week started off with a trip to the Art Gallery of Ontario:

Experiencing Janet Cardiff's 40 Part Motet Installation...
....surrounded by Henry Moore's sculptures

And after connecting with more traditional paintings...

...we walked under the powerful 'Snake' that WeiWei created...with back-packs to create a political statement about the tragedy of 1000's of Chinese children's lives lost in a earthquake.

And then went upstairs...around and around...

... to look at a multi-media exhibition "Lost in the Memory Palace" by Janet Cardiff and George Bures Miller. Unusual environments to walk through...

...with sounds that created an extra element of mystery
The favorite was this one ...

...and the most disturbing; only the older kids were allowed in to see.

AND then on to something very traditional...the Collection of Ship Models

This is the tiniest model which continues to fascinate all...

Dashran's favourite ship
Working in that light took patience
And he created a beautiful outcome....

We took to the outdoors in the following days...

Picking currents in our front garden...
                                          Some actually were saved ...
For dessert ~ Yum ~ with icecream!

The parkland was perfect for discovering nature....
We introduced 2 snails to each other...

On the walk in the forest were lots fungi

Time to do some landscaping drawings to prepare for our landscape paintings; a back-to-back view

~ Alexia's painting of the bridge with tree beside it ~

Anamika has the perfect idea...let's see how it evolves.....

She likes the crossing of paths

Her final oil painting from that mornings sketches.

And Amanda loves the grove of trees and rocks

~ Amanda's landscape oil painting that captures her view ~

The playground never ceases to entertain us!

We were lucky to have good weather to work on the oil paintings outside..
The great thing about having older kids this week was being able to take on oil painting.
~ Bridge art with chalk!

It's a tradition - people love walking over our bridge drawings.

"Pink Unicorn says Hi" The girls called Catherine that affectionately all week.

~ A visit to our neighborhood artist Murial Tong;  She is in her 90's and going strong!
She had just finished this painting of her grandmother in oils
....so the kids had a deep appreciation of her skill!

And then out came this project Muriel and the church ladies are working on
for the earthquake survivors in Haiti. Guess what these 'blankets' are made of?
plastic milk bags!! School children bring them in and then they are cut into strips and crocheted.

~ Yeah a sunny day for ~LAWN ART!

We ended the week with an outdoor art show for the parents and the neighbors:

Those that came were amazed by the amount of work the children did!

Tea & treats for all...

They love explaining how the art was created!
They were so happy to have Mrs Tong come by!
Alexia's Art;
 a tiny painting

A matted piece of textured painting on paper.

Alexia's watercolor using resist

Amanda's art;

Annamika's Art;

A Crane in the Reeds
Fimo panda bear fun
Dashran's Art:

WEEK 2:  Art with a 2 young children..a different pace. I learned to go with the flow...and did we ever create some cool art!

The lion had a surprise in its beard

Bridge art with chalk..

Lovin' the grassy field and sun!
FIMO;  was used in their own very different unique ways.  Sara Joy made jewellery...

Oliver made snakes...

And a unicorn was added to the mix! Note the chopstick 'horn'

Another cute art activity: Shoe sole rubbings turned into stick puppets!

Rest time after lunch; from the littlest one...tucked in by Sara Joy:
o
To the 'older' children getting cozy in their wicker chairs for an art camp rest

A good use of my 40 year old Art History books; a booster seat!
After lunch it's time to paint on the lawn...they love this!

Two samples of their outdoor paintings....

And what happens when we first draw with crayon before the wash of colour

Swimming after painting in the hot sun makes sense!

A DAY DOWNTOWN AT THE ROM: We had 2 random acts of kindness bestowed on us as we stopped for hot chocolate across the street to warm up on this cool morning before the ROM opened:
This nice policeman bought Sara Joy a chocolate treat, after he heard me saying that I wouldn't.

AND 2:  the mother and daughter walking across the street with us offered to share their family ticket with us!

A SUN FLOWERY day...
We had a bright yellow bouquet of sunflowers to inspire all this art:

A painting by my assistant.

A display of all of our sunflower paintings

Sara Joy's watercolor and crayon sunflower

The first sunflower painting in her sketchbook...she likes squares!

An acrylic painting on canvas.

The pearls for the collage naturally turned into another jewellery making session.

Besides the sunflower art,  here is Sara Joy's display of all the special things we made!
That was a fast week!

Time to say good-bye :-(
